SARAH WATCHED THE men walk toward her. It was hard not to compare the brothers to each other. Isaac’s blond good looks drew her eyes, but there was something about Levi that made her take a second look. He was dark where his brother was fair, but he had a quiet strength about him. She could see it in his walk and in the way he held his shoulders back, as if he was capable of carrying the weight of his family easily.

His dark eyes were framed with thick eyelashes. She couldn’t always tell what he was thinking, but when he smiled, his eyes glinted with humor as they crinkled at the corners. He didn’t smile often enough.

She went back into the house and began dishing up bowls of soup. She carried them to the table one by one while the men washed up. After that she went into the living room. Henrietta was lying down with her eyes closed. Sarah touched her gently on the shoulder. Her eyes came open immediately. “Is it ready? It smells yummy.”

Sarah offered a hand to help Henrietta sit up. “Don’t stand too quickly. It can make you dizzy.”

“Don’t tell my sons I said this, but I rather enjoy being fussed over.”

Sarah grinned. “It will be our secret.”

“I believe the lavender in my pillowcase is helping me sleep.”

“I’m glad. Now, if I can just find something that will spark your appetite, I’ll consider my job here a success.”

Henrietta stood. “I’m not dizzy at all.” She seemed mildly surprised.

“That means your blood pressure is getting back to normal. Which is a very goot thing.”

The two women walked into the kitchen together. Levi, as the head of the family, was seated at the head of the table with Isaac on his right side. Henrietta took a seat at the foot and Sarah sat across from Isaac. Everyone folded their hands, closed their eyes and said grace silently. Levi cleared his throat to signal the end of the prayer and everyone began to eat. As with most Amish families, there was no chatter at the table other than a request to pass the biscuits or the butter. Henrietta ate slowly, but Sarah was pleased to see she finished most of her soup and half of a biscuit.

When everyone was done, Sarah stood and began to clear the table. Henrietta gathered together the bowls, but Sarah took them from her and carried them to the sink. “I’ve got these. You should go out and enjoy the nice weather for a little while.”

“The meal was goot,” Levi said, getting to his feet. “We’ll be working on the porch roof this afternoon. I hope the hammering won’t disturb you, Mamm.”

She waved away his concern. “Work comes first.”

“I’ll get those shingles out of the barn.” Isaac rose and left the house.

He hadn’t even mentioned if her cooking was good or not. Part of the reason for her taking the job was to impress him with her wifely skills. Sarah tried not to let her disappointment show.
